Fast Facts

The School maintains a balanced curriculum.  There is no streaming and classes are mixed ability groups with age appropriate promotion. St. Winifred's School is one of the few private schools in Barbados offering both primary and secondary education. There are three departments: Preps, Juniors and Seniors.


The Prep Department  (3 to 7 yrs)

Average class size: 20/21 students

Curriculum:

Early language and number skills form the basis for the Prep. curriculum. Reading is taught through phonics as well as sight words. The writing of letters and numbers is taught with great care on correct formation. Students explore topics that teach them about the world around them. The go out on form trips and work on projects together. Teachers incorporate a variety of techniques in their classroom including learning through play, using manipulatives and various games.

Students take part in other classes including Physical Education, Music and Movement, Drama, Ballet, Football, Karate. There is a Reading Scheme in place where students borrow books every day to help improve their reading skills.

Assessment of Students
Students receive informal assessments throughout the school year.

Learning Support
Students who have been identified for extra assistance receive remedial support each week.
Early in the academic year the students are assessed by a Speech & Language Therapist.

Workbooks & Supplies
These are provided by the School and are included in the term’s fees.

The Junior Department (7 – 11 yrs)

Average class size: 20/21 students

Curriculum:

Subjects include:
Mathematics, English Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Spelling, Vocabulary, Science, Social Studies, Music, Art, Drama, Physical Education, Computers.

Assessment of Students
Continuous assessment for term marks. End of Year examinations in term three of each academic year.

Learning Support
Students who have been identified for extra assistance receive remedial support each week.

Text Books
 Students rent Text Books from the School at a fee.

The Senior Department (12 – 16 yrs)

Average class size: 22/23 students

Curriculum:
Commercial:  Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM), Information Technology, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Home Economics: Food & Nutrition.

Humanities
:  Geography, History, Social Studies Music, Physical Education, Visual Arts, Drama.


Languages
:  English (Language and Literature), Spanish.


Sciences
: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science, Human and Social Biology, Technical Drawing, Mathematics.                 
    

Our campus

There are many areas around the school where students can congregate to eat, chat, share ideas or simply  recharge. Each department of the school has a covered area for the students.  Our compound also houses:

 Sports

We have a vibrant sports programme both during the school  day as well as in our after school programme called SWAP (St. Winifred’s After-school Programme). Activities include football, cricket, volleyball, netball, cross country, athletics, dance, tennis, Art and karate.  This year we are adding Fencing and Archery.  Our Sports Days in Term 2 are very exciting!
